Rev. Thomas J. Powers hails from Lynn, MA where he grew up in a family of six. A graduate of St. John’s Prep, Danvers, he earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Following graduation, he served in the district office of a U.S. Congressman and subsequently pursued a fifteen year career with American Red Cross Blood Services.
Fr. Powers has been pastor of St. Maria Goretti Parish, Lynnfield since 2003. Ordained in 1995, he began theological formation at Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Cambridge and holds the M.Div. in Pastoral Ministry from Blessed John XXIII National Seminary, Weston. Fr. Powers is a certified chaplain through the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. Since 1997, he has assisted in chaplaincy on call at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Fr. Powers is passionate about his faith and his family. Both are gifts that strengthen his personal witness to Christ and his commitment to priestly ministry. While most will call him “Father”, he’s crazy about being called “Uncle Tommy” by his nephew Caleb and niece Catherine who live nearby.
“Believing in Jesus is not something we do in isolation. Jesus Christ gathered a community that became His Church. In turn Jesus ensures that His Church - every member of His Body is nourished - by His Word and by His Sacraments. As members of the Body of Christ gathered as St. Maria Goretti parish we share a journey of faith. As a community of disciples, we cultivate an open and welcoming witness to Jesus Christ in our Roman Catholic way of belief, life and worship”.
